California Production Coalition: Fighting to Keep Hollywood Filming in California. https://lnkd.in/g-BtDZgq Entertainment Partners is excited to be part of the California Production Coalition to ensure California remains THE place to film! California has phenomenal resources and over 100 years of experience in productions. Excited to see this coalition being launched today! It's very important to note, Productions in California bring high-paying jobs and economic activity to every part of our state. And I'm proud to be part of the fight to protect that. Are you ready to join the fight for film, TV, and streaming production in California?   Along with nearly early three dozen film, television, and streaming production businesses and associations have formed the California Production Coalition to advocate for policies that strengthen California’s film industry. It’s a pleasure to be working alongside other businesses to improve conditions for filming in our home state. The group, including members like the Motion Picture Association (MPA), Television City Studios, and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, aims to address declining production activity, which has been slow to recover after the pandemic and last year’s strikes.   Representing prop houses, equipment leasing firms, payroll companies and other service providers, the coalition is focused on expanding California’s film tax credit program. Their first priority: supporting Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposal to increase the annual program from $330M to $750M. This expansion could boost local jobs and revenue, building on the $961.5M in tax revenue and over 110,000 jobs supported by the credit between 2015 and 2020, per the LAEDC.   The coalition, which began organizing last summer, aims to educate policymakers and the public on the benefits of keeping productions in-state. They also advocate for reducing red tape to make California more competitive with rivals like Georgia, New Mexico, Canada, the UK and Australia.   With production volumes down 17% globally and reality TV shoots in Los Angeles declining by 56%, coalition members warn of the economic ripple effects on businesses that rely on a thriving production ecosystem.   The coalition’s mission: ensure that Hollywood’s legacy and economic contributions remain rooted in California, while creating a stronger, more competitive future for the state’s film and TV industry.   https://lnkd.in/gxXi4BuQ https://lnkd.in/gxXi4BuQ Entertainment Partners #CaliforniaProductionCoalition #CaliforniaFilmIndustry #TaxCredits #Hollywood #jobs

So what is the problem with AI? Nothing. Well... It depends on your AI. Take ChatGPT (the older version). Was asked today if there was an AI solution that could write scripts for say, radio ads. I mean, yeah. It can. Conditionally. I explained that AI when it comes to writing is great and ChatGPT has some really great Virtual Assistant features that if exploited can really make your life much easier. So I did an experiment just to see what could happen. I asked ChatGPT to write 200 words using these talking point: Jones Pharmacy Taccoa Georgia Been in business since 1963 Specialize in compound medications have all your healthcare needs over the counter meds prescription meds convalescent supplies medical assistant appliances home supplies toys "your home town pharmacy who cares" Here is what it wrote: Jones Pharmacy in Toccoa, Georgia, has been a cornerstone of the community since 1963. For over half a century, it has provided a wide array of healthcare services and products, ensuring that locals have access to everything they need for their well-being. Specializing in compound medications, Jones Pharmacy offers customized prescriptions tailored to individual patient needs, a unique service that sets it apart from many other pharmacies. In addition to compound medications, Jones Pharmacy carries a comprehensive range of over-the-counter and prescription medications. Whether you're in need of everyday health essentials or specialized treatments, they have you covered. Too many words for LI) (196 words) Not bad at all. A little long, but I wanted longer than shorter. So rewrote it down to 145 words. What is a reasonable expectation that publishers should have about feedback from SSPs? "A publisher is like a car driving down the road without any posted speed limit. Publisher is pulled over and given a ticket for speeding. Publisher: Officer, if I knew the speed limit, I'd comply. Officer: If we posted the speed limit, you'd break it!" There needs to be more communication. Publishers should not be penalized for small missteps that are often unintended and corrected. #Intent In a way, intent doesn't matter. Mistakes happen but just like a retailer has an obligation not to put bad items on the shelf, bad inventory is bad inventory. SSPs are responsible for quality supply. Outcomes will drive clean up. #Incentives to create quality outcomes: Optimera we sniff inventory to see if any of it gives off a "naughty" whiff. When the buying hose is pointed at good quality inventory, whether it is #Direct Sold, #ProgrammaticDeals, or the #OpenExchange, it all works the same. Good report from Variety on #generativeAI in the film and TV industries. One intriguing tidbit was how big an effect people think AI will most likely have in certain areas of the industry: the top three are search and discovery, video analytics, and localization. Content creation was further down the list. It's also got a good outline of the state-of-the-state, as well as an overview of attitudes toward the tech from a number of different parties.

Post Two in my series explaining who's who on a film shoot, and ever wonder who oversees the entire production process? Meet the Executive Producer. The Executive Producer, or EP, is more senior than a Producer and is the person behind the scenes ensuring a film gets made on time, on budget, and at the highest quality. Here’s what they do: 1️⃣ Secure Funding The EP’s first mission is often to find the money. Whether it’s from studios, investors, or brands, they make sure the project has the financial backing it needs to get off the ground. 2️⃣ Assemble the Team The EP hires the director, key crew members, and often the main cast. They bring together the right mix of talent to make the film or video shine. 3️⃣ Manage the Budget Once the money is secured, the EP keeps a close eye on the budget. They ensure that every penny is spent wisely and that there are no nasty financial surprises during the production. 4️⃣ Creative Oversight While they might not be involved in the day-to-day creative decisions, EPs have the final say on major creative aspects. They're there to ensure the film stays true to its vision and appeals to its target audience. 5️⃣ Problem Solver in Chief Every production hits a snag or two. The EP is the go-to person for solving problems, smoothing over conflicts, and keeping everything on track. 6️⃣ Marketing and Distribution After the film is made, the EP often plays a role in its marketing and distribution. They work to get the film seen by as many people as possible. Of course, roles and responsibilities can vary due to the type of project. In short though, the Executive Producer is the glue that holds the entire production together. They make tough decisions, manage finances, and ensure the project stays on course. EPs- Require all your producers to use the same structured system so all your financials are consistent and easy to read from project to project. Producers- Take time to sharpen your tools to ensure EPs are impressed by your financial recordkeeping. Every cent matters. I saw the Brian Eno doc (ENO) and loved it! It’s such a joyful, funny, intellectually stimulating, and incredibly well-made film: it had me riveted right the way through. I didn’t expect such a life-affirming and fun film. I also enjoyed thinking about some of the big ideas raised in the film (Why do humans like music? Why do we make art etc?), especially because these ideas are articulated in a light-hearted rather than a pretentious way. I walked away inspired to be a more creative producer and try to push the envelope more.   But ……..did I see the same version of ENO as you? Probably not! The film is what the filmmakers are calling a “generative documentary” so they have filmed and cut many scenes about Brian Eno – and his life and work – but a different version of the film is created for each screening.  A new software program (created by the filmmakers) picks the scenes and the order. This follows Brian Eno’s ideas and work around generative art: he sees songs and artworks as planting a seed rather than being one finished piece that stays the same forever. For me as a producer, one of the most satisfying parts of making docs is that you work on them for years, then you all agree on the very best version of the story and eventually the film is finished and it’s the same every time people see it. So, I’m not sure I could deal with my own anxiety following this creative process: I kept thinking "what if the “best” scenes didn’t appear in the film for a super important screening?!?" Argh! I asked Exec Producer Natasha Dack about this afterwards and she said it’s about surrendering to the generative art process, which is part of Brian Eno’s innovation and process. Plus she explained 30% of the film is always the same (I think it’s the beginning, middle and end) and the other 70% is different each time. Should I dub or should I sub(title)? That’s a question that comes up for many producers. Of course, it’s partly a budget issue – subtitling your video is less expensive than dubbing. But there are a few other factors involved: - who is your audience? - how important is it that they be able to follow the video with less effort? - how important is the content? For some target audiences, subtitles are the right call: - a bilingual audience – e.g. a mix of French speakers and English speakers - an international business audience - anyone who is both literate and highly motivated to watch your content BUT... Sometimes going with subtitles limits your reach. Some types of videos really should be dubbed. ☝️ For marketing content, you want to remove every possible obstacle that could interfere with your viewer’s attention. ✌️ If your viewers may have less fluent literacy skills, or if they are older and may have low vision, make it easier for them, and go with VO. And include same-language captions, too, to make sure that your video is accessible to everyone. --- My company, Power of Babel, provides top-of-class dubbing and subtitling for film and television, marketing content, non-profits, etc. Want to discuss your project?
